So I made a fancy frame to go in Dan Beiting’s basement. We went out with his kids, collected some mud, set up a camera, and waited 6 months. Then we DESTROYED the painting, swabbed the biofilm, and ‘rewilded’ the mud in his back yard. Then he and his lab sequenced the DNA resulting in 800 species identified from our 29 successful swabs!
